Methods Of Change: Goals Vs. Systems

If you do something every day, it’s a system. If you’re waiting to achieve it someday in the future, it’s a goal. - Scott Adams
When you want to make a change in your business or life, is it more effective to set a goal, or to implement a  system change?

For example, if you want to get healthy, should you set a goal to lose x pounds, or, put a system in place to do a set amount of specific exercises at the same time every day?

In his awesome blog, Farnam Street, Shane Parrish gives an overview of Scott Adams' new book, How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, and shares the ten top lessons he gleaned from the book. I was particularly drawn to takeaway # 8: Systems Trump Goals.

Basically, you're in a state of failure until you have succeeded at your goal. But with a system, every day that you maintain the system, you have succeeded, and furthermore, you have much greeter odds of meeting your ultimate objective by following the system you have put in place.

What do you want to achieve? What are your goals? And what systems are you putting in place to achieve them?

And the last big question - are you maintaining those systems?
