When things are falling apart, I can try to put them back together on paper.
When everything is going my way, I can celebrate with my keyboard.
When I'm lost in a thicket, I can hack my way through with my pen.
I've been journaling as long as I can remember, with ebbs and flows in frequency and volume. Without question, the periods when I am regularly writing are times when I feel more grounded, more connected to my values and goals, and in touch with what I want from life. It's a simple, challenging practice that makes all the difference in my sense of authenticity and well-being.
That's why I suggest it to coaching clients, if they are open to it, whether or not they have ever written, and regardless of whether they consider themselves a "writer". As long as they can let go of value judgments of good or bad and just tell the truth on the page, it will be a useful experience. Easier said than done, of course.
There's a great piece on Journaling Basics on Writing Through Life, an excellent resource site for all things related to journaling. Check out the writing prompts, pour yourself a cup of Earl Grey, and pull out that old composition notebook. It won't hurt a bit, I promise.
